DOROTHY CHURUKIAN Obituary

Dorothy "Nevart" Churukian passed away in Bloomfield Hills, MI on August 22, 2020. Born in Highland Park, MI, she was the daughter of Armenian immigrants, Nazenig (nee Maghakian) and Misak Avedisian. She attended school there, while growing up with her younger sisters, Hasmig and Jeanette. After graduation, Dorothy married Antranig Churukian, and had their three daughters, Adrina, Arlene and Alice.Dorothy worked for many years as an executive secretary for Chrysler Corporation, and later at the Country Day High School, helping put her husband through dental school. After Adrina married, came two grandchildren, Aram and Stefanie, whom they both adored. Sadly, Andy passed away at age 53, before their third grandchild, Lorig, was born. Andy's death prompted Dorothy to return to work. With her great secretarial skills, she secured a position at University of Detroit College.Dorothy met Frank, her longtime companion, with whom she spent many years continuing to enjoy life to the fullest. As her grandchildren married, great-grandchildren came along, Jack, Peter, David, Lucie, Mary, Ani and Michael. She felt each day was precious and would often reply, "I'm the luckiest woman in the world, God Bless those grandchildren".Her sons-in-law, Dave, the late Bob, and Gary, all had a special place in her heart, as did her sisters, nieces, nephews, and their families. After her mother passed away, Dorothy became the matriarch of a rapidly growing, close knit family. Dorothy's Armenian Heritage, with all its traditions, were especially important to her. She made sure she passed that love on to the family. Listening to the Armenian Radio Program on Sunday morning was a routine for years. She was a member of the Armenian Red Cross and, later, the Armenian Renaissance Association, which she named.Dorothy was a true lady. She would put on nylons and a skirt every day, along with lipstick and jewelry, until her health began to fail. She never smoked or drank. And, she stayed out of the sun.Dorothy made friends wherever she went, at every stage of her life. She had childhood friends that lasted a lifetime. As the years passed and her physical abilities were challenged, her friends and family assisted her so as not to miss a beat of enjoying her life. Smiles and conversation were special to her. She loved to laugh! Her family most benefited by her inner strength, that was such a part of her being. It was something they all counted on and admired. She was strong and always positive. We all have been Blessed to have had her in our lives for so long and will hold her in our hearts always. FAMILY MEMBERSHer late sisters: Hasmig Elledge and Jeanette Stepanian. Daughters: Adrina & Dave Sherman, Arlene & Gary Aidem, Alice & the late Bob Knighton. Cherished grandmother and great-grandmother of Aram & Amanda Sherman, (and their sons, Jack and Peter), Stefanie & Mark Coburn (their 3 children, David, Lucie and Mary), Lorig & Bill Bishop (and their children, Ani and Michael Coe). Her upbeat personality and smile will be missed by numerous nieces, nephews, their families, and a long list of lifetime friends.
