Dr. Hoplamazian Obituary

Dr. Aris Hoplamazian, affectionately called Dr.Hoppy, passed away with his family around him on January 10, 2017. Born in Detroit on June 18, 1924, he was the son of Garabed and Yerchanig (Kayabalian) Hoplamazian. Soon after graduating from Highland Park High School, he entered the U.S. Navy to serve his country during WWII. Because of his special training as a hospital corpsman, dental assistant and hygienist, he became a Pharmacist Mate 3rd Class. He sailed into the South Pacific theatre of war, where he served in Guam and earned several medals. Returning to civilian life, he attended the University of Detroit and went on to study dentistry at the University of Michigan, where he earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. He opened his successful dental office in Detroit and later moved to Dearborn, from where he retired after many years. Because of his expertise, Dr. Hoplamazian became the Chief of Dentistry for Detroit Harper Hospital (for 36 years) and served in the Northeast Regional Board of Dental Examiners. He belonged to many professional organizations, including the American Dental Association, American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists, Frances B. Vedder Society and the Pierre Fauchard Academy, the PSI Omega Dental Fraternity and the Detroit Dental Club. A proud member of his faith and heritage, he was an active member of church activities in St. John Armenian Church and was one of the founders of the Detroit Nareg Lodge of the Knights of Vartan, where he was a Past Commander. With his charitable outreach, he became a founding member and Past President of the 100 Hyes, a philanthropic organization of men who help the needy. In his leisure time, Aris loyally attended every home game of the UM football team and was also a devoted golfer. With his family, they took seasonal trips to Northern Michigan. But the allure of Florida always beckoned him to go South, where he sailed on a number of sea cruises and eventually moved to his oceanfront Boca Raton condominium after retirement. Always energetic, he looked forward to power walking with his Florida friends in their walking club.........FAMILY MEMBERS: Beloved husband of Alice. Loving father of Eric (Lisa).
