Dr Nersesian Obituary

Dr. Andrew Nersesian died at his home in Canton, Michigan on June 15, 2016, three weeks before his 89th birthday. >>>>>>>> Andy was a loyal son, brother, friend, husband, father, and grandfather. Born in Detroit, Michigan on July 5, 1927 to Vergine (Papazian) and Hagop Nersesian, he was the youngest of three sons. The death of his father when he was just five years old strengthened the bond with his mother and brothers, Kapriel and John. Andy contributed to the lives of others through his service, medical practice, and family life. >>>>>>>> He was extremely proud of his Armenian heritage and he instilled that pride in his children and grandchildren. Andy taught them about the Armenian genocide and the experience of his parents and extended family during that time. >>>>>>>> He grew up in the Delray neighborhood of Detroit and maintained lifelong relationships with neighborhood friends and classmates from Southwestern High School. During World War II, Andy enlisted in the United States Navy while still a senior in high school, and reported for duty on his 18th birthday, July 5, 1945. He did not experience combat duty, but served just enough time to qualify for the benefits of the GI Bill, which helped finance his education (along with help from his brothers) at Wayne State. >>>>>>>> After earning his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy, he worked as a pharmacist for Cunningham Drug Store. Three years later, he entered the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine where he graduated in 1957. He returned to Detroit and completed his internship at Art Centre Hospital. Andy then set up his general practice in the Detroit suburbs where he practiced medicine with his partner Charles Karibian for 36 years. He was on the medical staff of Art Centre Hospital and Garden City Hospital. >>>>>>>> In their first year of practice, Dr. Karibian hired Kathleen McNicholas, and as fate would have it, a year later, Kathleen and Andy were married. Together they had four children, Nancy, Andrew, Paula, and Christine, and were blessed with four grandchildren, Bradley, Kira, Brian, and Dana. By marrying Kathy, Andy inherited a large extended family who loved and respected him. >>>>>>>> Andy was generous in so many ways. He provided medical care to all who needed it, regardless of ability to pay. He provided physical exams to the children participating in the Boys and Girls Club on a voluntary basis. And he provided care to his extended family to such an extent that one day his brother Kapriel kiddingly told Andy "You won't be making any money today, it's all family in the waiting room!" >>>>>>>> He also influenced the health care careers of several professionals. Two of his young cousins, Drs. Andrew and John Zazaian, also pursued careers in Osteopathic Medicine. Several of his office staff, including two of his daughters, pursued careers in nursing. And other office staff and his eldest daughter pursued careers in health services management. >>>>>>>> Andy enjoyed following current events. He loved reading the Free Press every morning and the Wall Street Journal every evening. He planned family vacations that instilled a love of travel in his children, provided rich opportunities to learn about US history, and the chance to see the beautiful American landscape. In his younger days, Andy loved the sport of horse racing. His brother Kapriel introduced him to the fun of going to the race track. That fun carried over to trips to Las Vegas. >>>>>>>> Later, during their retirement years, Andy and Kathy moved to Las Vegas where they resided next door to John and Myrna, Andy's brother and sister-in-law, for nearly ten years. In 2004, they moved back to Michigan permanently. Andy and Kathy shared 56 years of married life together. >>>>>>>> Andy will be warmly remembered for his kindness and his loving spirit. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> In the care of Simon Javizian Funeral Directors, visitation will take place in Neely-Turowski Funeral Home, 45100 W Warren Ave; Canton, MI, on Sunday, from 4pm to 8pm, with Dan Gark prayers at 7:30pm.
