GEORGE ANDONIAN Obituary

George Andonian By Brian Andonian........... Dad was born on June 28, 1927 in Detroit, Michigan. He was in grade school during the Great Depression and times were tough. During that period the family ate day old bread which was purchased for 6 cents per loaf. When the war broke out in 1941, dad was selling newspapers on the corner of Fort St & Livernois. As a teenager, he was considered a track star at Detroit's Southwestern high school. Dad enlisted in the US Navy in June of 1945 and was stationed in the Philippines for about a year. He was discharged in August of 1946 and has earned WWII veteran status. Dad began his career at Ford Motor Company in 1949 as a clerk. He worked his way up to the position of metallurgical engineer with the Steel Division. Dad would travel almost weekly visiting steel mills and stamping plants in Chicago, Milwaukee and other cities in the Midwest. In the summer months during the 70's and 80's, Sean and I would often travel with him to Chicago and Milwaukee on his company trips. Dad would take us to the nice restaurants, museums, and amusement parks that the Chicago area had to offer. Dad married Peggy Scanlon in 1959. They moved into a brand new house on Rochelle Street in Dearborn Heights in 1964, a few months after Sean was born. Even though mom and dad were divorced while Sean and I were in elementary school, Dad always maintained a very close relationship with us, and was directly involved with our daily activities. Sean and I visited with him every single weekend up through the time we graduated high school. Sean and I looked forward to those weekend visits since there was always something fun to do with dad -- lunch, movies, and weekend trips. Dad loved to take us on vacations, and there were many of them. Besides the dozens of trips to Chicago and Milwaukee, dad took us to Florida, New York, Washington DC, California, Las Vegas, Hawaii, and Mexico. A few times, we joined Uncle Andy's gang at the Double-H Horse Ranch in Brevort, Michigan. Those trips are deeply rooted in our fondest memories. Throughout the late 80's and early 90's Dad thoroughly enjoyed the annual fishing trips to Northern Canada with his brothers Walt, Andy, and Sam. Dad retired in 1982 and had spent his time playing golf with his good friend Zaven, playing bridge with Brother Andy and his friends Charlie and Mike, and traveling to Vegas and Mexico. More than anything, dad loves his family. Due to his kind and gentle nature, dad was well liked immediately by anyone who came to know him. He has been a great influence on both Sean and me. Of the most important things our father has imparted on us are the importance of family, a sense of fair-play and honesty, and a willingness to help others..........FAMILY MEMBERS He was the son of Barounag and Hanem (Kasparian) Andonian.
