Nina Sarkisian died peacefully at home on October 19, 2025 at age 99. The daughter of the late Krikor and Armenouhie Doctorian, Nina was born in Chicago, Illinois on April 5, 1926. Married to the late Albert Sarkisian for more than fifty years, Nina was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, a skilled baker, and dear friend to many. She was active in a number of Armenian organizations throughout her life, including the ACYOA, AGBU, and Evereg Fenesse Educational Society, and was Nakhgin Dirouhi of the Daughters of Vartan Zabelle Otyag. A dedicated parishioner of St. John Armenian Church for nearly seventy-five years, Nina sang in the Komitas Choir, baked and volunteered for the annual Bazaar, helped with the Sunday School PTA, and was a longtime member and former chair of the Women’s Guild. In later years, Nina especially looked forward to playing cards at the St. John Senior Lunch each Tuesday.
FAMILY MEMBERS
Nina was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Takouhi, who died in infancy, as well as by her beloved husband Albert. She is survived by her children Dr. Edward (Anna) Sarkisian, Linda (the late Frank) Houhanisin, Barbara (the late Peter) Rupas, Lisa (Stephen) Derderian, and Allan (Rachel) Sarkisian. She was the dear grandmother of Diana (Todd) Byrne, Sara (Morgan) Sarkisian Bell, George (Dr. Sarah Johnson) Houhanisin, Dn. Dr. Aram (Dr. Diana Ohanian) Sarkisian, Matthew (Marilly Palettas) Rupas, Tyler Sarkisian, and Emma Sarkisian. Nina was also a beloved great-grandmother to Sona, Anya, Aiden, Sophia, Greg, Simon, and Iphiyenia.
FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS
Visitation will occur at St. John Armenian Church (22001 Northwestern Hwy., Southfield, MI) from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday October 27, 2025, with Dan Gark prayers at 7:30 p.m. The family will receive visitors from 10:00 a.m. Tuesday October 28, 2025 until the funeral service at 11:00 a.m.. A hokejash memorial meal and Daughters of Vartan memorial service will follow in the church hall. Graveside Committal Serices with Interment will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery (19975 Woodward Ave., Detroit, MI) at 2:00 p.m.
